In this workshop, Sr. Donna Kustusch spoke on the empowerment of women, using Centro Santa Catalina as a concrete prophetic example of such work. Located in a marginal colonia in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, this community of women coordinates classes on issues such as self-esteem. They also operate a women's sewing cooperative, and communal prayer plays a central role in their lives. In the words of their mission statement, these women &lddquo;seek a better future for themselves and their families through their fundamental values: respect, love, friendship, justice, peace, moral security and sisterly love with persons of different cultures.

For over 28 years, the houses of hospitality operated by Annunciation House on the border between El Paso, Texas on the United States side and Juarez, Chihuahua on the Mexican side, have provided hospitality to more than 80,000 refugees, immigrants and undocumeted from Mexico, Central America and 30 other countries. Ruben Garcia spoke of the reality confronting people in migration on the US–Mexican border. As the national debate on immigration reform enters a critical stage, immigrants speak of having to navigate a border turned into a gauntlet that makes use of tactics and technology tthat were initially designed for use in warfare. As the US environment becomes increasingly hostile toward immigrants, the voices of the poor in migration have become a prophetic voice, born of injustice, demanding a response from people of faith committed to the principles of justice and human rights.

In this workshop, Chuck O'Herron–Alex explained the philosophy of the Homegrown Nutrition Program (HGNP) and commented on the successes and failures that have taken place in its first three years. Chuck also discussed the attempt of HGNP to empower, support and uplift the garden participants while at the same time moving the project more fully into their control. Photos of the garden project were shown so that workshop attendants can see the beauty and productivity of the gardens.
