As
Stephen and I travel in Ireland, we are following the sad events in New
Orleans and the Gulf Coast. "How vulnerable we are", it seems
to be telling us. Even the strongest country in the world cannot protect
itself from the "terrorism" of nature itself. Perhaps this will
help the USA to live more truthfully in mutual love and God's care, instead
of thinking we can always protect ourselves by our money, our armies,
and our power. Our leadership is not very well thought of in Europe, in
fact it is usually open disdain and sad disappointment for what America
has allowed itself to become. Maybe this "act of God" will help
the United States to see that we should take care of our own house and
our own people, instead of trying to attack and change other countries
by force and domination.
The prayers of the Irish and English are still being offered for the suffering
people of the world, and even for our people. God is compassionate through
our friends. I am sure you are finding ways to be the same.
Peace and all good,
Richard Rohr, OFM
